I broke a couple of pins once on AMD CPU put a small 2mm copper wire piece inserted in the right hole then reinstalled CPU and it worked

If you leave the LGA motherboard protection cover on until AFTER the CPU is installed and remove it before you close the retainer (on the 775’s the cover would pop off as you close the retainer) you have less risk of damaging the pins.

I worked with a someone who managed to nail something like 15 pins on an LGA whilst taking off the CPU socket cover.

This coworker also managed to not install enough motherboard mounts (luckily) so the board would flex enough so that he could install a stick of ram backwards. Both the board and the stick survived.

Intels CPU’s are overly price and very cheaply made, the CPU and the cooler
AMD CPU’s are much better quality but run too hot and take too much power, however they are easy to damage
As an engineer I recommend AMD, however Intel is great for servers since the power and thermals are so much better

If you have a broken off pin on you AMD CPU. Get a sewing pin, measure it and cut it to the length of a A CPU pin on (it might take a few tries, and you might need to cut it slightly longer, once you place the pin in and pushed it down a bit you should know if its long enough – Don’t jam it in and lose it in there, use small nose pliers). Locate the placement of the missing pin on the socket. Carefully put the replacement pin into the correct hole on the socket. Lower the CPU into the socket and check that the pin lines up and is not to short or long. Then, put a heat sink on and see if the system boots. I’ve personally done this, and I see no reason why it shouldn’t work for you too.

I managed to fix a LGA board after a “run in” with a cotton ball.

It was as easy as just running my finger over the area in a pattern after all the cotton was removed.

I’m watching this video on that PC.

I know the way to get the amd cpu working which has broken pin. 🙂 just cut the resistor contact and put it inside the motherboard’s socket where it needs to be, then install the cpu. I have already tried that and it works! :))

LGA has the pins on the board if they will brake or anything else you just need a new board (if u couldn´t repair it allready) also intel have a socket pin protector cap or shield don´t know who they call it, but for their boards this is a good idea to save your pins!!!!!!! AMD have the pins on the CPU and a little wholes in the socket bracket and no option to protect the pins! the older AM2 / AM3+ were able to repair it sometimes if some pins break out of their position.but since AM4 the distance from pin to pin are even smaller like before! so it´s not so easy and there are even more pins wich could brake! with AM3 its even works if you use a EC card to put them into the right position, but with the new socket AM4 the EC cash card ist to wide and not possible any longer to repair it with it.i did it with some AM3 cpus the most of them i got allready fixed and repaired! but also they can lose pins!!! the worst case! sometime it´s possible if u found these pins to set them into the wholes on the board where they should be placed in the right possition, if there are only 1-5 maybe it will be good & work on.if u lose the pins….yes then i think you will need a new board.but one time i also lost 1pin and take another metal piece (i don´t remember wich item it was) and put it into the socket whole where it should be in “normal case” but remember this! fixed cpus and also their pins shouldn´t get overclocked, cause the voltage can push them up.with fixed pins on a intel board it allready works, thats my experience with it…

I bent about 1/5th of the pins on my Ryzen cpu when switching to water cooling because I forgot about the thermal paste yanking the cup put with the cooler. I had to repair about 50 pins with nothing but a pairing knife while wearing three pairs of glasses which left me with a tiny mostly blurry window to even see the pins (I’ve had cataract surgery so my eyes have a fixed focal length set for distance).

I was never prouder than when the cpu reseated after hours of meticulous gentle prying with my giant bear paws I call hands. It was like performing open heart surgery with a clever while wearing a gas mask.

Im glad INTEL went the LGA method…. in the past, the P4 s478 cpus that have the pins, countless times i’ve encountered when removing the heatsink, the cpu got pulled out along with it because of the very sticky thermal paste, luckily the pins didnt get damaged, but it was still nerve racking to say the least.

Sometimes you get lucky if you bend or break a pin where the CPU will still work. Some pins are redundant (example, there are multiple pins for power and ground, so if you break one of those, the CPU will likely still function perfectly fine).

About damaged LGA sockets, usually you can easily replace the whole socked. The wholle reason behind LGA is that the system is solder less. The socket makes contact with the PCB the same way it does with the IC. You can simply unscrew it from the pressure plate on the back side of the PCB. Though some manufactures may use rivets or other mounting methods.

LGA was developed when lead was banned by Rohs and companies started to look for alternatives to using lead based solder.
When the directive first came out there was no workable alternative to lead based solder and problems like “tin whiskers” (google it) made the use of high pin density sockets problematic. A LGA socked is basically a grit with small springs that make contact between the IC and the PCB by pressure, eliminating the need for solder completely.

I suppose PGA better cause it provides larger contact area and better locking mechanism (more reliable and also there is no need to make lock as cutted edge, just no holes for pins is a good approach for lock). Also in terms of customer support service it is easier to return CPU with broken pin rather than motherboard with broken pin. And also spring like contacts not really good solution cause copper has low fatigue limit. That means copper do not have a distinct limit and will eventually fail even from small stress amplitudes. So even good quality spring like contacts grid may fail.

I think I need an LGA mother board and cpu because I keep breaking a cpu some how lol the first time I took the cpu out of my pc to clean the thermal paste off because I was upgrading the fan my sister saw it thought it was a toy took it and she dropped it by mistake. The second time I had a cpu (one I was getting to replace the one my sister broke) and I was taking it out of the box and my hands were shaking I got it to the pc safely and then when I was about to install it I dropped it. At cried for 3days lol

Why Intel or AMD make a better design socket? A PGA processor with metal frame around the processor for protecting the pin, and ZIF socket with lever like on LGA design?
This socket will be perfect on the both aspect.
Cause, i have 4 LGA Mainboard with broken pin socket form my client, lol!

0.5 mm mechanical pencils fit perfectly over the pins on an amd cpu, and if fixed quite a few just putting a mechanical pencil on the pins and bending them back into position

Hey. One correction please after a year 🙂 In PGA if you break a pin, you should try it for if it works. That pin can be useless for you. Personally I am using Phenom II 710 with 2 broken pins for 8 years 🙂 You can try it on lga too ofcourse 🙂
