Toshiba X300 4TB/5TB Budget Hard Drive Unboxing, Benchmark, Noise

Toshiba produces a very affordable high-density hard drive model: the X300.

The X300 comes in various capacity sizes: 4TB, 5TB, 6TB. I have owned a 4TB model since January 2016 and bought a 5TB model in July 2016. In this video I unpack the new 5000GB drive and run a benchmark on the used 4000GB drive, as well as a noise test. You can hear a high quality recording of the noise that it produces – one of the main complaints by buyers, along with the two years warranty (something that seems standard to me).

I recommend the X300:

The specs of this Toshiba X300 are:
4TB, 5TB or 6TB
Desktop 3.5 Inch
SATA 6Gb/s
128 MB Cache aka Buffer
Internal Hard Drive

I’m from Australia and i bought the toshiba 2tb 3.5” 7200rpm hard drive, it costed me around $96 AUD. My hard drive is also really noisy and i find it rather annoying when recording.

Nepu-Tech USA says:

WTF??? This HDD sounds like a jack hammer??? xD

ThirdFocus says:

I’m ether stuck between choosing Toshiba X3006TB or western digital black 6TB , Toshiba X300 is cheaper which is good because my build is way too expensive as it is, not sure which one to go for :/

Nepu-Tech USA says:

Also this packing is fucking scummy! I bought an older Toshiba and it had a really nice foam cage and an anti static SEALED bag. With this crappy bag they can get a return package it again and resell it and you would never know, I think it’s BS and lame 🙁

Costs 90$ in Norway for 4tb

KLU says:

Hey guys! I just received my 6TB X300 and I wonder if I should return it. In idle there is that one hit/move (I suppose it’s the head) sound every 5 seconds. It is annoying, well I’d say even it is louder than when writing stuff onto the HDD.
I don’t know what it might be. Is it normal in this drive?

??Will you advise me to buy
Thank you

Who told you toshiba hdd is dumb!

krishnan srinivasan says:

Sir ,
Is this HDD similar to WD RED ?
Thank you 🙂

C MJ says:

There is a 6TB version that I am thinking of getting. In the US it costs $133.00 for 6TB. This is a good price, but the 2 year warranty scares me a bit as it is going in my NAS to be used as a backup drive, so reliability is key. I may end up getting 2TB WD gold data center drives instead, they are much more as far as cost per GB.

C MJ says:

I have two of these in my WD NAS and they perform very well. I can’t be happier with them. They are a little noisy compared to my WD Raptor 1TB 10K hard drives. They are reliable so far. I paid about $180 for the X300 5TB model.

Jan Schleuter says:

i own a 4 terabyte hard drive now for a year and i’m aksing myself for months if the sound is too loud and if there is a problem with it. But thanks to your video I’m sure that everything is fine with it^^

Wayne Fry says:

I put mine in the Playstation 4 and yeah it sounds super loud. But I couldn’t hear it over your cpu fan.

Florijin says:

Seems like you recorded the sound of your boxed cooler

Phantom Wind says:

How is the 5tbB HDD doing? it’s been quite a while now and i want to step my HDD game up and i’m really interested in this particular item, is it a “good to go” kind of purchase or is it a “stay away from this” kind of purchase?

6tb toshiba x300 is 180 gbp in uk amazon

Coastwalker says:

5 TB £145.46 Nov 2016 BT Shop UK. Thanks for the noise test. Hard drives make almost no noise compared to the scream that they used to emit just rotating 🙂

TapL says:

Thanks for the review! I’m not even sure if I want to buy it with that noise. This won’t mix well if i’m trying to build a quiet PC.

MD Omar Faruque says:

It is much much louder than my wd blue

Damien says:

i have one of these guys and when under load it can be noisy but for the price i got for a 5tb drive it does very well and with out of box speeds on crystal disk of over 200mbs sequential it does well. after you load stuff on it ,it will end up more like 170-180 on the speed but still a great drive other then the noise

Polish Husars says:

Poland 200 USD for 5 TB

Pedro Gutierrez says:

what about the 4tb one is it any good

Cool Unboxing – I want that drive , but they are very expensive in Denmark! I have bought several of their P300 series both in 500GB & 1TB and they are very good and the price is fantastic!!!

xzkevinlabszx says:

Thanks for the Sound recording. I thought my Toshiba 4TB was faulty due to the head moving sound being loud. It sounds like Geiger counter.

hennie Mulder says:

south africa R2500.00 for 4tb , just a comment though i have been using external toshiba harddrive for the past 8 years , i have yet to have a problem with the drive, although only 160gb.

KinkyKinga1 says:

I’m contemplating a pair of the Toshiba 4tb 7200 rpm drives (MD04ACA400) in raid-0 for an upcoming build. they have a longer warranty than the Seagate 4TB ST4000DM005. both drives are available here in Australia at present for 199 AUD.

sure, the Seagate drives are pretty damn quiet (I have the ST4000DM000 5900 rpm in my current machine and it’s pretty much inaudible) but I’ve always considered Seagate drives to be questionable in regards to reliability

Charlie Wilson says:

$148 free shipping USA. ON Amazon for the 5TB.

Silent CG says:

Bought the 5TB for $119.00 on newegg.
